有道不有道
今天翻译时碰到一个问题：pretty 作副词时代表什么含义？
起初我认为它和 quite 是同义词，比如 pretty cool（相当酷）或 pretty good（相当好），我查了一下有道，也说是“相当地；颇”的意思。但和原文对不上：

原来是这个词的含义本身就模棱两可。就好比别人问你情况如何，你回答“还行”，每次听到这种答案我的第一个反应是“你丫行到底还是不行，给个准信，行不行？”。pretty 也是如此，它所修饰的那个形容词的程度有多深，完全要视当时的语境和背景情况而定（可能 90%，也可能只有 30%）。因此 pretty 作为副词时在正式场合极少使用。换句话讲，pretty 十分适合在打擦边球和逃避责任时使用。
通过这件事情我还明白了一个道理：一本好的词典比什么都重要，“有道”还是不太有道。我打算去买一本 Merriam-Webster。
